Patient handling is the #1 cause of musculoskeletal injury in health care workers. In response to this problem, safe patient handling and mobility (SPHM) programs have become the standard of care as research has demonstrated their effectiveness. In fact, as of 2013, 11 states have passed SPHM legislation. Besides the benefits for staff safety, SPHM programs have significant benefits for patients.
Successful SPHM program implementation requires an individualized approach – to match the needs of a specific unit’s patient population and activities with the right equipment. However, even when equipment is available, it is often not used. A successful SPHM program achieves high rates of compliance and equipment usage through education, staff engagement, policy and protocol, and stocking strategies for slings and other supplies.
P.S. Associates helps to design and implement successful SPHM programs that are tailored to the particular needs of a specific unit and their patient population. We provide:
- Needs assessment – Are you planning a new SPHM program? P.S. Associates provides consulting services to determine the types of equipment, policies and procedures, and training that best match a particular facility’s needs.
- Compliance support – Is your SPHM program working? P.S. Associates helps to identify and resolve obstacles to SPHM compliance and effectiveness, and engage staff in developing and testing solutions that will increase and sustain usage.
